So What Is Figging?
Figging is the practice of peeling and then carving a piece of ginger root into a convenient shape to insert it within a bodily orifice. Most commonly the anus but also the mouth, vagina or urethra. Slowly the oils from the ginger create a warming and then slight burning sensation that builds for about 30 mins. It’s a moderately intense, uncomfortable sensation which doesn’t injure the body in any way.
A Very Ancient Practice
Figging has been around since the ancient Greeks who inserted a variety of objects into ‘bodily openings’ as both an erotic practice and a punishment. They used radishes, garlic and ginger. Indeed, rhaphanidosis is the act of inserting a radish into the anus, it is mentioned by Aristophanes as a punishment for adultery and promiscuity in the fifth and fourth century BC. Figging was of course taken up by the Victorians as a humiliating chastisement to add to their arsenal of cruel endeavours. While today we have the expression to ‘ginger up’ meaning to make someone or thing more lively. This derives from ‘gingering’ the barbaric exercise of putting ginger root into a horses’ rectum in order to make it more feisty and thus more valuable before a sale.
Making An Insertable Fig
To make a fig for erotic BDSM consensual play, you first need to choose a largish piece of root with which to carve out a dildo or butt-plug shape. Make sure the peeled ginger is smooth, with no rough patches or edges. Usually an unpeeled part of the root is left protruding out, acting as a handle for easy removal. However, former cordon bleu chef Mistress Evilyne (left) has come up with her very own, unique way to make a ginger butt-plug for a bit of good-ole figging! So enjoy this wonderful instructional clip. Not only will you learn something new but you’ll be enticed by the super sexy, sultry tones of Mistress Evilyne’s mesmerizing voice; and a bit of singing 🙂

This is also the reason for the Term “cocktail” as “gingering” would cause the Horse to cock its tail up. True story. See David Wondrich Imbibe second edition.
Etymology is fascinating, thank you for that 🙂
