Circe was the goddess of magic in Greek mythology, an enchantress and sorceress. After murdering her husband she was exiled to a solitary island, where she metamorphosed lost sailors into animals, usually pigs. We meet her in the tales of Homer & Ovid, and in art, notably the Pre-Raphaelites, she is usually portrayed with a cup (a magic potion) or with lions & pigs at her feet.
