Richard Ankrom: Kitsch Fetish Ornaments
I just adore these kitsch fetishy ceramics by American ‘Guerrilla Public Service Artist’ Richard Ankrom. A compelling juxtaposition of familiar mawkish ornaments and kinky S&M.
In his own words, “The contempt for effusive sentimental goods, that pander to nostalgic consumers led me to take these objects and disable them. In this process mass-produced figurines become individual and surreal.”
Well they certainly spank the backside of consumerism – but for me they also show that behind the sentimental chintz of life there is always a dark underbelly. The convention and banality we portray to the world covers this shadow. And mass self-denial is a necessary lie in order to keep the thin hymen of civilisation’s virginity ‘intactus’.
